[Home] :: [Support] :: [Internet Configuration] LMi.net MacOS 7 Setup
LMI strongly recommends upgrading your older Macintosh for an improved Internet experience. Most modern web browsers will not run on Macintosh systems older than 7.6.
That said, here is configuration information for LMI customers using older Macs. This assumes that you have used the LMI installation CD to install Internet access software on you Mac. If you need this software, please contact LMI tech support.
1) Open the Config PPP Control Panel. You will find Config PPP in the Control Panels folder located in the Apple menu.
2) In the Config PPP Control Panel, click on the PPP Server Name: pull-down menu and select the POP server nearest you. If your city is not listed, chances are that one close by is a local call for you. Please consult the front of your telephone directory for a list of prefixes that are considered local to the prefix you are dialing from.

3) Next select the Config...button.
For Port Speed, 38400 is recommended for most Macs, although you can set this at 57600 if you have a PowerMac and a 28.8Kbps modem. For reliable high-speed modem connections, a modem cable that supports hardware flow control is essential. If you have trouble finding such a cable, LMi.net can provide one. If you have an 14.4Kbps modem, set the port speed to 19200.
Most modems work well with PPP service when configued to the factory
presets. However, if you have trouble establishing a reliable connection, it may be because your modem needs a custom initialization string. Check out "modem init strings" - this is a list of modem strings that have been tested with MacPPP.
Note: If you would like your modem's speaker to remain silent during the dialing process, append "M0" (that's M-zero) after your existing modem string.
Note that the area code for the modem number is not listed, since we assume that you are dialing from within the area code. If you are dialing in long-distance, be sure to add the 1 + area code in the Phone num field. If you need to dial 9 to get an outside line, add "9," before the phone number.
3) Next choose the Authentication...button in the bottom left corner of the control panel.
In theAuth. ID box enter your chosen login name. Remember that login names are
always all lowercase.
In the Password box enter your password. (you will only see bullets as you type)
Passwords ARE case-sensitive.
Click on OK, and then click Done.
5) You are now ready to dial up our modems. You can manually establish a connection by opening the Config PPP Control Panel and clicking on the Open button.
Once you have established a connection , then you can launch an Internet applicatin such as a Web browser or e-mail application.
